Compared to traditional sewer systems, where waste and water completely by gravity flows downwards into the main sewer line, the Overhead System is usually custom-built by having all of your above-grade fixtures flow by gravity and disconnecting your below-grade fixtures from the main sewer.
Then all the below-grade fixtures flow into a pit and pump setup that will be made to discharge into the previously mentioned grade system. In this setup, if the city sewer backs up, the storm waters would have to try and reach up to your above-grade fixtures—which of course are protected by gravity from the flooding.
This system may be more expensive initially, but it pays dividends during flooding emergencies and it can sometimes even increase the value of your home if you ever decide to put it up on the market.
