Northbrook is a village located at the northern edge of Cook County. When incorporated in 1901, the village was known as Shermerville, named after Fredrick Shermer. The Village later changed it’s name in 1923 to the present name, Northbrook. This name was chosen because the West Fork of the North branch of the Chicago River runs through the village. Being that the river does run through this village, residents are vulnerable to flooded basements during the time of torrential down pours. To find out if you live in one of the flood hazard areas please call the Village.
