The Village of Winnetka is located in northern cook county about 16 miles north of downtown with a population of about 12,000. In 2015 the village was ranked as the richest town in Illinois and the second richest town in the United States making it one the most exclusive suburbs in the nation.Winnetka is known as a “separate sewer community,” meaning that there are two sewer systems, a storm and a sanitary with the exception of the narrow strip along Greenbay Rd. The Village of Winnetka participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) which makes federally guaranteed flood insurance available for all eligible buildings, whether they are in a floodplain or not.In 2011, the village was hit by a severe rain fall that overwhelmed the sewer systems, this led to severe flash flooding and many residents experienced flooded basements. As the Village of Winnetka has limited funding to allocate to this program each year, reimbursements will be on a first come, first serve basis. The maximum reimbursement made to any homeowner under this program will be 50% of the cost of the initial installation for either an anti-back-up device or an overhead sewer, but not to exceed $3,500 or $5,000, respectively. Only those costs directly associated with the initial installation of an overhead sewer or backflow device shall be considered eligible for reimbursement.
