Located about 23 miles north of downtown Chicago, Highland Park is a beautiful community right on the shore of Lake Michigan where two village ports – St. Johns and Port Clinton – were founded around 1850 by German immigrants. After the city incorporated in 1869, the city grew larger by the annexation of the neighboring Village of Ravinia in 1899. The area grew in population especially fast in 1920s when it almost doubled its population.You can still see the results of the early developers’ careful planning when you visit the community. Highland Park has also many homes designed by famous architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright or David Adler. Jens Jensen, a landscape architect, also worked in the area.Today, the city of Highland Park has a population of about 32 thousand, and is probably the most famous for its Ravinia Festival. It attracts thousands of music lovers every year, and without a doubt is one of the best places to enjoy music on the Chicago’s North Shore. The community is conveniently connected with Chicago with a Metra rail, as well as the Edens Expressway.
