Kenilworth is uniquely one of the smallest communities in the Chicago area. It is located on the shore of Lake Michigan between Wilmette and Winnetka, and has a population of just under 3 thousand. It was founded by Joseph Sears who acquired the land around 1890 where the community was later built. Sears named the town after a town in central Warwickshire in England. The community was incorporated in 1896. As far as construction of new homes was concerned, the minimum lot size of 100′ X 175′ was established, and many of the homes in the village were designed by famous architects. The area has been hit with floods and torrential rains several times. The most recent one was in late July 2011 when the Chicago area got roughly 6 inches of rain in a matter of hours.
